All of us have uttered these words at one time or another, me, you, your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. Unfortunately stress is a common issue; it affects all of us. So what is stress and what is the best way to deal with it?

What is the definition of stress?

But what is stress?

Stress is the body’s physiological response - through a drastic influx of hormonal changes in an attempt to help you cope or deal with the stressor.

But really…what is stress?

Stress is when you are experiencing the Fight or Flight response. Fight or Flight symptoms can look like:
  • Increased respiration
  • Increased perspiration
  • Dilated pupils
  • Constriction of blood vessels
  • Increased muscle readiness

Fight or flight is meant to help us deal with a stressful situation for a brief period of time so that we can survive another day; something our ancient ancestors would have experienced.

In the last 50 years, the human race has created a culture where our lives have been consumed with being: "busy, busy, busy," "go, go, go" looking for instant gratification, multi-tasking and living a lifestyle that society portrays we think we should be living.

This has led to non-stop endless stress (being in a constant fight or flight mode).

When these elevated levels of fight or flight stress hormones are circulating in a constant and continuous state, they start to wreak havoc to our body. The side effects of stress can look like:

  • Digestive issues
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Hypertension
  • Increase in Triglycerides

Okay, got it…now I know what stress is! But what is a healthy way to deal with stress?
